In The Stove, Lind surveys his times with savage laughter and surreal vision. The stories in this collection, presented as mystical, sometimes Biblical, fables, may at first seem “pious homilies,” says the author. But on further reading they display both a caustic irony and a tragic sense of the contemporary human condition—or as Lind calls it, “the agony of our pre-messianic times.”
